Health Testing for Progressive Retinal Atrophy in Miniature Dachshunds
The past couple years, we have come to learn and be aware of the genetic condition called Progressive Retinal Atrophy (cord-1) and how it can occur from time to time in miniature dachshunds. In 2017, we made the decision to DNA test all our breeding dogs for this disease, and make the results a part of our decision-making process within our program.
Below is the disease as defined by the Animal Genetics website. Also see below the chart stating the results of breeding a “clear” male to a “clear” female, and the resulting offspring from pairing a “carrier” with a “clear” partner. The resulting puppies from either of these pairings means that we won’t ever produce “affected” puppies who could potentially be diagnosed with this disease.
